How to Qualify for SBK Advanced LASIK

SBK Advanced LASIK is the most well-known and commonly performed laser vision correction procedure. It helps patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

You typically qualify for SBK Advanced LASIK if:

  • You’re over the age of 18.
  • You’ve had a stable prescription for at least 12 months.
  • The strength of your prescription (the degree of refractive error) is appropriate for this procedure.
  • You don’t have underlying eye conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or corneal disease.

During your consultation, our medical team will determine whether you’re a candidate for SBK Advanced LASIK. Certain factors may prevent you from receiving SBK Advanced LASIK eye surgery to correct your vision.

There are reasons you may not qualify for Advanced LASIK:

  • The shape and thickness of your corneas, or your prescription strength, don’t provide enough corneal tissue to make the correction.
  • Patients over the age of 50 may need another form of vision correction due to vision changes associated with aging.

Don’t Qualify for LASIK? Try These Options for Vision Correction Surgery

There are several other options available to you at Durrie Vision to ensure that Kansas City residents can make the transition away from glasses and contacts.

However, remember that if you haven’t had a well-regarded refractive surgeon and ophthalmologist provide a consultation, you won’t know for sure what procedure for laser vision correction near you is best for your eyes. You might be surprised to discover that there are opportunities aside from SBK Advanced LASIK for younger patients, as well as options that address eye aging and cataracts, in patients over 40.

Durrie Vision offers procedures for those who don’t qualify for SBK Advanced LASIK. Read more about these on our website.

  1. Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA): Also known as Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), this alternative can meet the needs of patients who are 18 or older, but don’t qualify for SBK Advanced LASIK due to vision conditions, such as less corneal thickness, contact lens scarring, a prior eye surgery, and other considerations.
  2. EVO ICL™ (Implantable Collamer Lens): A small, comfortable lens is implanted behind the iris to improve your vision. EVO ICL™ treats extreme nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. This procedure is typically suitable for patients 21 to 45 years of age.
  3. Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE): As our eyes age, a new lens may be required to prevent cataracts and correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and further aging. Patients who receive this procedure are typically over 50.
  4. Refractive Cataract Surgery (RCS): During this procedure, cataracts, which cause cloudy, dim, or yellowing vision, are removed from the lens. Durrie Vision offers premier multifocal, extended-depth-of-focus lens technology to eliminate the use of bifocals and restore near-, middle-, and far-distance sight. Cataracts can appear at any age, although they are most common in patients over 60 years old.
  5. SMILE Vision Correction: Our team may also recommend SMILE if you don’t require SBK Advanced LASIK. SMILE is primarily for those with astigmatism or mild or moderate nearsightedness,, and can also treat patients’ farsightedness. Much like LASIK, however, you must be at least 18 and have a stable prescription for a year to qualify.
