A Walkthrough of Our Procedure for Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and Astigmatism

You’re not alone. Nearly every patient wants to know what to expect from LASIK surgery. No one wants to go in with uncertainty, nerves, or confusion about this highly beneficial procedure. Follow us as we take you on a tour of the entire SBK Advanced LASIK experience at Durrie Vision.

Before Your LASIK Procedure

You already know the benefits of LASIK: improved vision without the frustrations and expenses associated with glasses and contacts. You’re looking forward to pocketing the funds you spend on new frames, lenses, and bottles of contact solution, and you’re already planning all the activities you’ve been missing out on without LASIK.

  • Start with a consultation: To take advantage of LASIK’s many benefits, schedule your free consultation. Durrie Vision offers an Advanced Ocular Analysis (AOA) exam, which is an evaluation to analyze your eye health and determine your candidacy for LASIK. We’ll also answer your questions and address any concerns to help you feel at ease. Many patients like to know whether we offer an optional mild sedative for nerves. We do. They also wonder whether LASIK hurts. It doesn’t.
  • About your AOA exam: This evaluation involves simple tests — nothing scary or painful. During your appointment, our highly trained specialists learn about your vision goals.
  • Meet with one of our doctors: Your doctor will review your test results and discuss a personalized treatment plan that includes one of our procedures, such as LASIK or another treatment option. We help you understand your procedure thoroughly and address every question you have.
  • Receive pre-operative and payment information: We also provide pre-operative instructions to follow on the day of your procedure. Our team is available to discuss payment options, including any special promotions, financing, or discounts available to you.
  • Catch a vibe: You’ll even get to experience what the environment will be like on the day of your procedure. The comfortable chairs, soothing music, and dim lighting? Expect the same calm, relaxing, VIP environment during your procedure. We also offer complimentary snacks and drinks.

The Day of Your LASIK Procedure

As outlined in the pamphlet of information we provide at your pre-operative consultation, plan on being at our office for about 90 minutes total. Although the actual procedure is just 10 to 15 minutes long, we spend time prepping you beforehand and offering recovery time from LASIK in a private post-operative room. We also review your post-operative instructions before you leave.

  • Pick a driver to come with you: After your appointment, you’ll need someone to drive you home, so choose a family member or friend who wants to come along for your SBK Advanced LASIK experience.
  • The start of your procedure: Our team runs additional tests, and we offer you a mild sedative, if needed, to help with any nerves. Anesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye. We use a small, gentle eyelid holder, so you won’t have to worry about blinking.
  • During your procedure: Whether you’re undergoing LASIK for astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness, the overwhelming majority of patients describe nothing more than minor discomfort. Most notice slight pressure, if anything at all.
  • Immediately following your procedure: Start your LASIK recovery time in a private recovery room where your driver can join you. Here, our team will provide instructions to care for your eyes at home and a reminder about your one-day post-operative appointment.
  • What you’ll notice: You can expect your vision to be blurry in the first few hours after the procedure. However, you’ll soon notice rapid and significant improvement in vision. You may feel sensitive to light and experience some mild irritation.

After Your LASIK Procedure

Recovery from LASIK is simple. Although recovery time varies slightly for everyone, most patients return to work, driving, and day-to-day activities the day after their surgery.

  • Your one-day follow-up appointment: We check on your procedure’s success, answer questions, and address any concerns. Most patients are cleared to drive at this appointment.
  • Additional appointments: Our team follows up on your progress throughout the year to check in on your eyes.
  • What you CAN do after LASIK: Remember to blink, as your eyes will be numb for 20 to 30 minutes post-op. Frequently use the artificial tears we provide; you can’t overuse them! Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as needed. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from wind and sun, and wear eye shields when sleeping for two nights. Also, relax after surgery. It’s okay to nap. Exercise without limitations and feel free to wear makeup after your one-day appointment, but be careful about application or removal.
  • What you SHOULDN’T do after LASIK: Don’t rub or bump your eyes. Be careful with the tip of your eyedropper when using artificial tears. You can shower or bathe, but avoid soap or water in your eyes. Don’t swim in a pool for one week. Wear goggles for the second week. Don’t swim or partake in watersports in the ocean or lake for one month.
  • Enjoy the results: After your recovery from LASIK for astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness, your final responsibility is to benefit from all that LASIK provides! Durrie Vision can’t wait to hear how your quality of life has improved with our expert help.
