Get to Know Your Alternatives to LASIK

LASIK Surgery

If you don’t qualify for LASIK, you still have options.

LASIK isn’t the only solution that helps you achieve sharper vision without contacts or glasses. Even if you don’t qualify for LASIK, there’s no reason to feel discouraged. Our expert team provides premium alternatives that meet your vision needs.

Our doctors often recommend one of our alternatives to LASIK based on:

  • Age
  • Eye health
  • Vision goals
  • Lifestyle or occupation
  • Corneal shape
  • Lens scarring
  • Previous eye surgeries

Refractive Cataract Surgery

Patients over 60 may begin to notice the symptoms of cataracts, including clouded, blurred vision. Refractive cataract surgery removes the cloudy natural lens and replaces it with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) for near, intermediate, and far-distance vision.

Refractive cataract surgery is an alternative to LASIK for patients with:

  • Cataracts that cloud the natural lens
  • Age‑related presbyopia requiring bifocals or readers
  • A desire to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses after cataract removal

About the cataract surgery procedure: During your 10‑to‑15‑minute outpatient procedure, our surgeon removes the clouded lens and implants a customized monofocal, multifocal, Light-Adjustable, or toric IOL. You can treat both eyes on the same day in the comfort of our office. We can also fine-tune your vision with LASIK following your cataract surgery.

Recovery time from refractive cataract surgery: Most people notice clearer vision within days. After a one‑day post‑op visit, you can usually resume normal activities while using prescribed eye drops. Your vision continues to improve over the following weeks as your eyes heal. Expect follow-ups from your doctor throughout the year to monitor your progress.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Much like LASIK, refractive lens exchange corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and age‑related presbyopia. By replacing your natural, dysfunctional lens with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL), RLE corrects your vision for near, intermediate, and far distances, while eliminating the risk of cataracts.

RLE is an alternative to LASIK for patients with:

  • Presbyopia (age-related vision loss), which causes you to rely on readers or bifocals
  • Significant vision errors that prevent laser surgery
  • Thin or irregular corneas, chronic dry eye, or prior eye procedures that rule out LASIK
  • A desire for a fast, effective solution that also prevents cataract surgery later in life

About the RLE procedure: This quick 10‑to‑15‑minute outpatient surgery removes the natural lens and implants a customized monofocal, multifocal, toric, or Light- Adjustable Lens™. Both eyes can be treated the same day in our Kansas City office.

Recovery time from RLE: Most patients notice clearer vision within a day or two. After a one‑day post‑op exam, you can usually resume regular activities while using prescribed drops. Your vision will continue to improve in the following weeks, and our doctors track your progress through scheduled follow‑ups.

More Alternatives to LASIK

Durrie Vision offers a wide range of state-of-the-art vision correction procedures in our comfortable, welcoming office setting.

Even if you don’t qualify for LASIK, you still have our expertise at your disposal to get the exceptional vision results you deserve.

Advanced Surface Ablation (PRK)

Advanced surface ablation, also known as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

PRK is an alternative to LASIK for patients with:

  • Thinner corneas
  • Corneal scarring from contacts
  • Previous eye surgery
  • High-impact occupations (e.g., athletes, military personnel)

About the PRK procedure: During your 10-to-15-minute PRK procedure, the outer layer of the cornea is removed to correct your vision.

Recovery time from PRK: Recovery time is longer for PRK when compared to LASIK, as the outer layer of the cornea needs to heal and grow back. PRK patients can experience optimal results up to a month after surgery.

EVO ICL™

EVO Implantable Collamer® lens (EVO ICL™) corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism without glasses or contact lenses. EVO ICL™ is particularly effective for extreme nearsightedness.

About the EVO ICL™ procedure: During a 20-to-30-minute procedure, we implant an artificial lens between your natural lens and your iris.

Recovery: The results of EVO ICL™ are often noticeable for patients right away. When comparing EVO ICL™ to LASIK, both procedures allow patients to drive and resume normal activities following their one-day post-operative exam.

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE)

SMILE is recommended for mild-to-moderate nearsightedness or astigmatism.

You can be eligible for either SMILE or LASIK at age 18, and these options have similar recovery timelines.

The SMILE procedure: During your 10-to-15-minute procedure, we use an extremely small, lens-shaped piece of tissue, called a lenticule, to reshape and correct your vision.
